Robert Edge Pine Primitive Oil on Canvas C 1780-5|
Description: American Primitive Childs Portrait, Circa 1780-5; most probably painted by Robert Edge Pine- a British born painter who was working in America during this time; depicting a young girl in a long gown holding flowers from the tree behind her. This painting shows the french influence present in american portraiture of this period. Wood analysis on the stretcher bars by the Center for Wood Anatomy Research found that they are a native american pine predominately found throughout New England, New York, and Pennsylvania. An X-Ray reveals that there has not been any changes, alterations or damage to the canvas under the lining.
