Northern Italian Ivory Inlaid Walnut Bureau 18th C
Description: Northern Italian Marquetry and Ivory Inlaid Bureau, Circa 1750; the top with a classical figure holding a torch and pointing to a book, the slant lid with floral marquetry and ivory classical figures, above three serpentine floral marquetry drawers with ivory leaf inlay; raised on cabriole legs/ the sides with similar decor. Note: Italian Renaissance art re-introduced Mythology and Old Testament references to the arts. For example the figure on top most likely refers to one of the mythological Sybils (Prophets) who were later adopted and interpreted by the Italians as the first messengers of the coming of Christ. The grouping on the lid has similar double meaning, with the seated figure of a wealthy Greek or Roman from antiquity with a servant washing his feet; similarly can refer to the story of Mary Magdalene.
Condition: is good overall, see photos.
