In 1866 he was awarded a prize from the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and traveled and worked in Rome from 1868 to 1871. Returning to Marseille in 1873, he became the favorite painter of Jules Cantini and Jules Charles-Roux for whom he painted commissions.
